For more than twenty years, Micheal Maxwell worked with students from junior high through university. For most of that time his talents were put to use working with below grade level, behind credits, at-risk high school students, and adults returning to school for their high school diploma. It was as natural as breathing to bring his love of writing into these classrooms. Year after year every assignment was met with “I hate to write!” While working through his student’s writing limitations and negative attitudes, he faced people who said with frustration, and sometimes outright anger, “Why has no one ever taught me this before?” They may or not have been shown the basics of writing an essay. One thing was certain, they didn’t understand it. So, they got further and further behind. You hold in your hands the result of all those years of giving “haters of writing” a clear, uncluttered method of turning their thoughts into cohesive pieces of organized writing. As a parent, you know the frustration and heartbreak of a failing student. Those kids are Maxwell’s stock and trade. If you are an adult trying to improve your written communication skills, or learn what you missed the first time around, you are in luck. It works for you, too! The Secret to Writing an Essay A Parent’s Guide for Teens and Tweens Who Hate to Write, was written with you in mind; parents who care deeply about their child’s success. Step by step, chapter by chapter, this little book lays out simple, understandable tools for taking your child by the hand, and lovingly guide them through the mine field of high school English! This is not a Handbook For Getting an “A”, it is a realistic guide to improving your child’s writing skills. The goal is to remove the “I hate” from any reference to writing. If we are truthful, most of us weren’t big fans ourselves! If your child is failing or falling desperately behind, we will be happy to see them pass. This guide will give them the tools to build their confidence in writing, take away the, “I don’t know where to start”, or worse, the lonely sense of failure at truly not understanding what to do first. Congratulations on taking the first step in unlocking the secret of writing for your child, and building a better school year. Micheal Maxwell holds a Master’s Degree in Education with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction from Chapman University in Orange, California. Mystery readers know him as the international bestselling author of the Cole Sage Mystery Series, and the young adult time travel novel, The Time Pedaler. Maxwell lives in Northern California with his wife and traveling partner, Janet. They have three grown children, and three grandchildren.

  • Maxwell hits the nail right on the head. I thank God for putting teachers in my life who instilled the love of reading in me. His ideas on right on the mark. Best of all, he gives everyone the best advice, brainstorming whatever you want to write about and making an outline is key to any project. Remember to cover "who, what, where, when, and why" and keep it logical will be enough to explain or write about most any thing that comes up. I have a grandchild who is going to be the next one to read this guide. Thanks for the great advice.
  • This is possibly the best tutorial guide I have ever read. My desire to assist young readers in the Sunday School realm, (and every day real life) has boosted my knowledge. It is nice to have a well thought out, written guide book with exceptional work pages and examples throughout the book. The back worksheets are well planned to use and copy. I especially liked the line drawings interspersed through the book. They were well placed. All in details and examples. What a help! I used this personally with a person to assist her in writing a outline form resume, and she got the job! Thanks to Mr. Maxwell for being burdening to write a meaningful and reliable guide, which is much needed in society's lack of formal and accurate writing of essays.
  • This book is engaging and full of humor! I could not put it down. Micheal hit the nail on the head when he described the different frustrations teens have in school. I had so many with English, but never knew how to help myself overcome them. I do not have children and probably will not for a while. Even so, I found this book incredibly helpful and healing for myself. All throughout high school I never felt confident with my writing skills. I'm a horrible speller. It was a relief to hear that such an accomplished writer such as Micheal has the same problem and still is very successful. I have always liked the idea of writing, I have been scared of not being perfect. I'm not as scared anymore and will use the guidance from this book to give writing another go.
  • Well written and extremely useful to me as a parent and teacher. I'm using some of the suggestions already trying to stimulate interest in reading for English as a second language learners.
  • For students and teachers who teach English writing.
A book that finally puts writing formats in easy and
Understandable manage for all ages. A awesome help for
Kids from 3rd grade to college to write reports to writing
resumes, or to help with writing short stories.
  • Great help
  • Michael obviously understand the minds of teens. He effectively engages the writer with a variety of activities and examples designed to encourage their best effort, without them even noticing. I will utilize this with my students as well as my own children. Hurrah!
  • Sometimes Junior High and High School students find difficulty understanding what they read; and when it’s time to write an essay about it, they tend to give up. Telling a student they simply need to pay attention to what they are doing does not help at all. Parents, grandparents or neighbors can, however, teach them how to learn to understand the written word and then follow basically the same steps in writing an essay about the subject. Not only does this approach help students, it’s also handy for adults who must write reports for their jobs.
Michael Maxwell includes an appendix that quickly sums up the major points and contains two charts you can print to help the student. I recommend this for anyone who has trouble writing short reports.
