Excerpt from An Annotated List of Experiments in Physics Used at the University of Cincinnati in the Courses in Experimental Physics Designed for Sophomore Students of the Academic and Engineering Colleges

This is not intended to be a course in Experimental Physics, but, as its title implies, merely an annotated list of some 270 experiments, any one of which might be profitably performed by a sophomore student in college. As a rule no attempt has been made to describe the experiment, but a reference has been given to a full description of it in a standard manual or text book.

In the references, for the sake of brevity, the name of the author has been given without the title of the work. Below, therefore, is a list of the books referred to with their publishers Ames and Bliss, Experiments in Physics, Harper Brothers, 1898. Barker, Physics, second edition, Henry Holt Co.

Son of My Soul The Adoption of Christopher Debra Shiveley Welch Arlene O'Neil 9781894936934 Books Reviews

  • It's always enriching to peek into someone else's life. So, you know, most books are good. I want as many details as the author is willing to share. I'm willing to pay the price of sharing in depression, envy, greed, sorrow, confusion to gain insight and widom.

The rare beauty of Son of My Soul is that it will make you feel bubbling joy in your heart, and you'll look at the future as filled with boundless opportunity and blindingly bright promise. Read it, and be a better person.
  • This story was written from the heart and brought me on a very emotional roller coaster. This story will stay with me and it brings tears everytime I think of what this woman suffered as a child but yet rose out of a loveless childhood to being a woman of a big heart that knows no boundaries. Debra was going to make sure history would not repeat itself and no child would 't have ever know what it would be like not to be hugged, cuddled and just feel love.

The story of her childhood and how she was treated and how she felt her whole life brought so many tears that it was hard to read the words on the page. I so wanted to hug that little girl who didn't know what a loving family was or what a true mother should have been to her. She faced so many obstacles but yet she grew up knowing that a child deserved love even if that child didn't look as other children did. My heart almost burst when she wanted Christopher even though he had a disability. But to her, he was beautiful and nothing was wrong with the way he looked. She loves unconditionally and considering she never knew that feeling of being loved, she grew up being able to give plenty of love to a child no one else wanted and she made sure Christopher never knew the feeling of never being loved.

I want to hug Debra and tell her she is one fantastic person and mother. Christopher couldn't have gotten a better, more loving, more understanding mother than her. If I could give this book more than a 5 star rating I would because it truly does deserve much much more.
  • It has taken me a little while to write this review and I find that happens whenever a book is so good, so sentiment packed that it moves me and becomes a part of me. That is what happened when I read Son of My Soul, the Adoption of Christopher.

The writer, Debra Shively Welch, has penned a tale to tell her adopted son about the hardships she faced growing up and how he came to be adopted as well as stories of their early lives together. It is an emotional journey that made me smile and cry at the same time. The love that Welch wrote this with pours from the pages and the reader can't help but feel it. Nor can the reader help but admire Welch for her strength.

I would highly recommend Son of My Soul, the Adoption of Christopher if you are a reader that values a well written story that will make you feel good by the end.

Can you imagine growing up with poverty, neglect, drunkenness and molestation? Author Debra Shiveley Welch can. In this poignant autobiography the author recounts how she overcomes these things and more. She relates her story in poems, essays and narration.

The author is a born storyteller. She takes you by the hand and leads you through her sad childhood. You experience with her the days when both of her parents are gone for days at a time, leaving the small Debra to care for her younger half brother and half sister. She cares for the children with no electricity, water or heat in the house. Through these heartbreaking years it is only her faith that gets her through.

You count the years, months and days until her graduation when she is seventeen-years-old. It is then that she can move out of the house. It is then that her life starts to improve and she lands her first job and friends. You rejoice with her when she finally meets `the one'. You cry tears of happiness with her when her adopted son, Christopher, arrives at the age of seven days old.

In this inspirational autobiography, the reader worries with her, cries with her and prays with her through all of Christopher's many surgeries.

"I visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art when the show, “American Modernism, 1910 to 1950” was running. I enjoyed the show very much. Jessica Todd Smith and her supporting crew did an outstanding job of putting together an interesting show on an important topic.
When I attend these special shows, I often buy the accompanying book, which the PMOA often publishes as a “go with”.

This book is titled, “Highlights from…”. In other words, not everything that was in the show is included in this volume. It is a very nice accompaniment to the show and I am happy to own it. However, there were some really interesting things in the show that I wish had been included in this book. I would have very much like to have seen the two formal dresses that were in the show. They were striking and spoke very succinctly to the theme of American Modernism. Additionally, the show included informative captions for the displayed artworks. These sub-captions are not included along with the artworks in the book. The book would be more educational if these sub-captions had been included. But otherwise, the book does a good job of covering the basic structure of the show. And it is a good general reference volume that I am happy to add to my modest library on art."

Hawks Dynasty The Chicago Blackhawks' Run to the 2015 Stanley Cup Chicago Tribune 9781629370644 Books Reviews

  • As a big Blackhawks fan, I was excited to add this book to my library. It will be a great memento of an amazing year and Stanley Cup run for this Dynasty team.

I love the included articles and selection of photos which I can return to over the years to re-live the excitement of the 2015 march to victory.

My only disappointment with the book is that the editors didn't think to include a page with the entire team roster. I think that is an awful oversight because I believe most fans would like to know who made up the amazing 2015 Blackhawks when they look back.

Well, if we are fortunate to win again somewhere down the road, I hope that they'll correct that error.
  • I got this for my boyfriend who is a super hawks fan. I wasn't sure at first if he would like it but once he saw it his eyes lit up. I knew he would enjoy keeping the highlights of this wonderful season fresh in his memory for years to come. This book highlights the hawks season with overviews of each game and full page photos to remind you of the joy you felt watching them over and over again.
  • Grandson really likes
  • Our whole family loves the Blackhawks and so we all enjoyed this book.

Perfect gift for Chicago Blackhawks fans. Our whole family loved this book.
  • using it like I should and working fine
  • A lot of history and insightful quotes and pictures in this book. It covered just about everything.
  • ANYTHING Blackhawks is GREAT
  • Excellent condition and beautiful book!

Another political year is upon us . . . a year in which we elect another useless figurehead to piss off the masses, confuse the classes, and, above all, reward the jackasses. It will be a time of fear, angst, and anger, the perfect moment for The Snark Handbook Politics and Government Edition. Filled with quotes, jokes, and timeless snarks, this brave foray into the political theater, old and new, will serve as a priceless source of sanity as you navigate the asylum.
In the same inimitable style as the previous bestselling Snark titles, this timely entry is guaranteed to amuse and entertain. The wit and humor of Lawrence Dorfman shines in this collection, where he highlights the ineptitude and malice that is American democracy. You’ll see first-hand the shenanigans that started with our Founding Fathers and still continue bravely on today. Hail to the Chief!

"This is not bad for a couple buckaroos. Has some quotes which are pretty stock. The quotes seem to lean right-wing a bit, as there are quite a few from Reagan and Coulter. This is to be expected, I guess, because conservatives have always needed writers and publicists to feed them lines, especially since the dawn of aww shucks politicians like C-list actor Ronald Reagan. In fairness, there are specific conservative and liberal section quotes, but the quotes tilt anti-liberal. I would have liked a few of the more well-known liberal quotes to have been included, but it's a short read.

Would be a great book for liberal pundits to respond to conservative-type thinking. For example, after Hurricane Sandy, someone needs to trot out this Reagan quote and ask if Reagan would think it appropriate after such a devastating natural disaster: "Government doesn't solve problems. It merely rearranges them.""

Inspector de Silva’s back with a new case to solve when the arrival in the hill town of Nuala of the heir to an English earldom leads to a mysterious death. Throw in a mega-rich Romanian count, his glamorous countess and an enigmatic British army officer and the scene is set for another colourful and entertaining mystery.

What reviewers say about Dark Clouds over Nuala

“Pure enjoyment to read the unfolding of mysteries with happy outcomes set in exotic Ceylon. The good-hearted Shanti is assisted by his capable wife Jane. Together they bring harmony and humour to East meets West. As refreshing as a cup of light Ceylon tea!” Annmarie Wharton

“Didn't want to put it down, brilliantly written detective story set against the backdrop of 1930s colonial Ceylon. The superb characterisation and setting had me captured from the very start. I read in in one day and smiled contentedly when I put it down.” Customer

“This is the second book in the Inspector De Silva mysteries series and it just felt like coming home. This story is set in Ceylon 1935 in the beautiful and normally tranquil hill town of Nuala. I can imagine sitting out on the veranda sipping iced tea in the sweltering heat but with a constant reminder of the wilder side of Ceylon just over the other side of the high garden fence. Just stunning!” Books from Dusk till Dawn

“Wonderful reads. I have now read the first two books in this series and have enjoyed them immensely. They are easy to read, and yet plot-wise, keep you captivated until the end. The 1930s Ceylonese setting, and its characters are a delight. Highly recommended.” DRG

“A delightful read - can't wait to devour the next one!” JJ McKay

"I liked this one better than the first book in the series. I especially like the convenience of having a book downloaded to my I-phone, never caught now without something to read if I find myself somewhere unexpected and without a book and a knitting project! Since I am never without my phone, my downloaded book goes with me---love it---and I did not anticipate that."

Dark Clouds Over Nuala The Inspector de Silva Mysteries Book 2 edition by Harriet Steel Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

  • Have read two of the Nuala books. I was interested in what promised to be a post-colonial perspective on a colonial period in an interesting if too often idealised/romanticised venue, ie. Ceylon, and there was some promise of the kind of sensitivity to the differing aspects of such society that H. R. F. Keating did so well from the, in post-colonial terms, usurped viewpoint of an actual India police officer. Inspector de Silva's Ceylon, however, is a far cry from the welter of ethnicities and languages and fiercely vital life of Keating's Mumbai. The first Nual book was passable, but the second book left me teed with the series. Where Keating's Ghoti never has to tangle with the imperial colonizers face to face, de Silva does, and comes off poorly in the process, far too often bending over backwards not to offend his British superiors. There were ample opportunities for him to exercise some agency, on behalf of the other people in his bailiwick if not for himself, but not fulfilled. Particularly egregious was the case of the Vedda family, the "original" Ceylonese inhabitants, on whose behalf his sergeant appealed to de Silva against an exploiting village headman. Did de Silva *do anything* about it? Nah. He tried to approach the British superior, was brushed off and gave up. It was left to his wife and the other women to arrange a match for the Vedda daughter. What happened about her brother and father was left completely unexplained.
In the meantime De Silva and his henchman appeared to do very little of any sort of policing, most of their days' being filled with going home for lunch, and drinking tea. Other cases but the one under focus? Nil? Other problems in the parish? Nah. If any small police force cd. bumble around in such idleness even in 1930s Ceylon, it cd. only be in Gilbert and Sullivan, so far as I'm concerned.
I put up with these shortcomings in book !, but when book 2 got to tossing a woman over a precipice into rain forest/jungle, onto rocks, and having her body found at least a week later still looking "as if she was asleep," my suspenders of incredibility parted with a deafening bang. When thispreceded a climactic scene that proved not only weak but entirely non-functional, my patience followed suit. Good luck to those who can enjoy these books. I'll stick to Inspector Ghoti. His shootouts are usually feasible, and at least he does something with his days beside drinking tea.
  • Oh my! I liked Harriet Steele's second Nuala book even better than the first, which was pretty darn good itself. In this one, we have English titled society with a mystery involving them with something that happened in Australia! The first chapter is a puzzle of identity--who are these men? But as all is slowly revealed to Inspector de Silva, this turns into a gripping story triggered by an "accident" at World's End, a precipice along a scenic route in Sri Lanka. The local color and detail of the horse races, so popular with everyone in Nuala, the gracious Lady Caroline whose family is the center of the mystery, and of course de Silva and his gathering of clues to the true identity of the nefarious characters, all braid into a page-turner of a book. I didn't see the solution coming and loved having it gradually uncovered. Unfortunately, uncovering it brings a bit of violence to de Silva that is unexpected!
The little sub-plot of Sergeant Prasanna and the village girl, Kuveni, gives fascinating insight into village politics and class prejudice and we cheer when Inspector de Silva's wife Jane figures out a way to keep Kuveni close by until Prasanna can make his case.
I cannot wait for the third book in this trilogy!!
  • This is the second book of the Inspector de Silva series and I have thoroughly enjoyed both of them. This one is even better than the first book, although they're both very good. Well written, complex characters, gives a good description of India in the early 1930's-- culture clashes and tensions with the British, trying to solve crimes when roadblocks are thrown in the way, racism, along with some romance. That is a lot to put in one book and Ms. Steel has put it all together very well.
  • I liked this one better than the first book in the series. I especially like the convenience of having a book downloaded to my I-phone, never caught now without something to read if I find myself somewhere unexpected and without a book and a knitting project! Since I am never without my phone, my downloaded book goes with me---love it---and I did not anticipate that.
  • A wonderful cast of characters, with Inspector De Silva being the crime solver and set in lush beautiful Sri Lanka in the early 1930's, this is the second book in the series and a great read. I am happy to have discovered this series (suggested by _ and am looking forward to reading them.
  • All three of the Inspector deSilva novels are a delight. Well-plotted, good character development and the exotic backdrop of old Ceylon, these novels are a welcome escape from the depressing news cycle.
  • I am really enjoying this series. The books are well-written, the characters believable, the setting original and the plots engaging.
  • So excited to have delightful light mysteries set in the 1930's and in India. I look forward to many more books from this author. Pure pleasure in the writing.

Lesley and Mo’s relationship is tested when Mo develops feelings for Jayne and the arrangement the triad struck in Rymellan 2 comes to an end. The three women know they must adapt to the inevitable changes for the triad to thrive, but the triad’s shifting dynamics would challenge the strongest of Rymellans—and does.

Rymellan 3 contains the following stories No Going Back, Crossroads, Convergence, Chosens, and Joined.

"What a great read! The author impressed me with how she managed not to have a main character but actually three main characters. There were so many emotions that presented themselves in this story. In fact, that seems to be the tool to keep the reader engaged, how will the other characters react to this or that.

Of course, this would not be a good stand alone book. One must read the preceding two books. Get to know the characters, the planet, the laws of Rymel. This is my kind of sci-fi. No racing out and killing things or rising to be the ruler of the next world. This is thoughtful sci-fi.

I hope there will be more of this triad. I would love to see how their relationship grows with children and careers of the three women.

Thank you, Sarah Ettritch for being brave enough to write something so different and strong!"

  • really liked this, would love to read more about these characters.
  • I have read all 3 books and each one left me wanting more. The last one was great, but would like to follow the triad and find out how they worked things out.
  • Great story. I recommend you read Rymellan 1@ 2. I'm sure you will enjoy them. This author had a wonderful imagination which I find delightful. I know you will enjoy all her books.
  • I really got into the rymellan series I have nothing bad to say about it, but this- it ended too soon
  • I enjoyed this series from start to finish, though I liked the third book best. Though I have never been a die hard science fiction fan, preferring fantasy, this series definitely captured my attention. It starts off a little slow, so you must give it a bit to get started, but once I was in, I couldn't put it down and I was relieved to see that all three books in the series were already available. It gets slightly repetitive, and I would have liked to have seen more background information about the world the story is set in, like who makes up the council, how the world got to be the way it is, and what other transgressions and crimes might have taken place throughout its history. But the characters were well drawn with clear and distinct personalities and the triad concept at the end was an interesting twist, both of which made this series a winner for me.
Wish we could see more of life after the joining!

  • I'm writing this review because the most recent review is three years out of date and all three were written prior to the 3rd ed. being published. The review (142 pages) is concise and covers topics for both the AP Computer Science A and AB exams. Also included is a chapter on the GridWorld case study. Each of the 21 review sections is followed by a set of 5 practice questions. There are six (3 A and 3 AB) practice exams with 40 multiple-choice questions, 4 free-response questions, solutions and a grading rubric for the free response questions. Also included are a set practical hints for students, glossary and index. I recommend this book for my AP students. One cautionary note; make sure you are ordering the 3rd edition. GOOD LUCK ON THE EXAM!!!
  • This is another example of a resource book that was once useful, but is now not mostly in part to how times have changed and so has the ap course. The book does provide a lot of information and some questions, but would prefer higher rigor questions.
  • Taught a high school AP class. The practice exams in here were a great practice for my students. Be sure to get the latest edition as this one is out of date now, I believe.
  • Perfect condition and received rapidly. Comment on content another time but looks in-depth and a keeper as a reference over the long term.
  • The Practice Exams in this book are good in general, but be careful they don't include the Marine Biology Simulation Case Study at all. (Litvin's book does cover the MBS case study adequately.)
  • This book includes good review sections that are short and concise. It also includes four excellent practice exams two for A and two for AB. Unlike some review books, descriptions of problems are very clear. The free response questions are about the level of actual exams, while the multiple-choice problems may be slightly easier than actual ones.

As pointed out by other reviews, the book does not include MBS case study. It also does not provide explanations on the answers. It could also improve the review section by adding some more details; yet still keep the reviews in its concise style.

Now a major motion picture from Paramount Pictures starring John Lithgow, Jason Clarke, and Amy Seimetz!

Stephen King’s #1 New York Times bestseller Pet Sematary, a “wild, powerful, disturbing” (The Washington Post Book World) classic about evil that exists far beyond the grave—among King’s most iconic and beloved novels.

When Dr. Louis Creed takes a new job and moves his family to the idyllic rural town of Ludlow, Maine, this new beginning seems too good to be true. Despite Ludlow’s tranquility, an undercurrent of danger exists here. Those trucks on the road outside the Creed’s beautiful old home travel by just a little too quickly, for one thing…as is evidenced by the makeshift graveyard in the nearby woods where generations of children have buried their beloved pets. Then there are the warnings to Louis both real and from the depths of his nightmares that he should not venture beyond the borders of this little graveyard where another burial ground lures with seductive promises and ungodly temptations. A blood-chilling truth is hidden there—one more terrifying than death itself, and hideously more powerful. As Louis is about to discover for himself sometimes, dead is better

"I had seen the movie before I read the book so going in I thought I knew what to expect. But I was actually caught off guard and found myself loving the book more then I loved the movie. I still think the movie is good but this book is just... more.

The characters in this book are just so complex. Each one of them feels real. One moment I am sympathetic with Jack a man who just can't seem to get a break. But the next moment I am scared of him and what he might do to his family. Wendy is also so much more complex. I found myself really interested in her and absolutely scared for her life.

Danny though is my favorite. He's such a bright and sweet boy and it was interesting to get into his head. I loved to read how conflicted he got between protecting his family but also not wanting to upset them. I also really love his interactions with Dick Hallorann who is also very interesting.

Overall this is an excellent creepy read."

Pet Sematary A Novel Stephen King 9781982115982 Books Reviews

  • I don't typically write reviews about books. I've read close to 20 SK books in the last year and a half and over more in my life...this is so unlike his normal character as a writer that it's unnerving. I've read IT, the Stand, 'Salem's Lot, Carrie, Dark Tower series 1-7.5(?) - everything chronologically before this book and tons of newer stuff (I'm working back through his catalogue from start to finish). Nothing compares to this. Prepare for the darkest form of horror. I can't with good conscience recommend anyone to read this book. It gave me nightmares every night that I read it. I woke up thinking about it, and couldn't get it out of my head. I'm reading something else as fast as I can...can't wait to get back to the basic SK. Nothing else holds a candle to this.
  • I finished this book about a half hour until midnight tonight. I had always loved the movie growing up so my brain conjured up the idea of reading the book. Seemed innocent enough and my sweet little naive mind thought, "how bad can it possibly be?" I read some of the other reviews just to see what I was getting myself into. After some peer research, I felt adequately prepared for the task at hand. As I sit here with all the lights on in my house, Boy Was I Wrong! I have been a little more jumpy and experiencing some pretty bizarre dreams since I began reading but nothing prepared me for the sheer terror I was in store for as I read the last 100 pages or so. By the time I reached the final pages, my hands and feet were ice cold and clammy. I am almost 30 years old and I was terrified to leave my bed to go to the bathroom. I worked up the courage (or my bladder couldn't take it any more) and embarked on the trek to the bathroom. As I passed my children's bedroom, my two year old started screaming and crying in her sleep. I am about 99.9% sure that I lost a little piece of my soul (and possibly gained a touch of PTSD) from fright! Overall, this book is great and by far the scariest thing I have ever read. If you have never read it, I highly recommend it!
  • I have to hand it to King- there's a reason this guy sells billions of books. He can really tell a story, flesh it out and pace it very well. He's also great at creating a believable, ordinary setting and then infusing the supernatural in a fairly believable way. Like others, I found the beginning of the book a bit too slow of a buildup; it could've been tightened up quite a bit. However this is probably the fastest I've ever read a long book. So the flow is generally very effective.

I don't want to spoil too much, but it's hard to describe without doing that. Sometimes his zombie thing works and sometimes it doesn't. It's most effective when describing his cat. I would say the highlight was the old man Jud's tale of Timmy Baterman; that was truly effective and eerie. By the final climax, it's predictable and off-and-on effective. He's most effective when he's using small details to set an ominous tone. The climax is over the top; it might have been more effective if the son had just been an eerie zombie and not a murderous one. Like others said, it almost becomes a "Chucky bloodbath".

His use of pop culture references is effective, if over used. He's used that device before and generally it somehow grounds the atmosphere of supernatural into an everyday setting which is what King excels at. Also, he refers to death as "Oz, the Great and Terrible", based on a child's view of Death as a force. It's overused, but very effective; it fits in with his meditation on death as an ever-present unavoidable danger that we all fight but ultimately surrender to. This is a tale of not accepting death; someone said he could've put more profound thoughts into this but I think he does a pretty good job for a popular novel. I don't expect serious existentiality in a horror tale; he makes his points in a believable way through the eyes of his characters. One of his strong points is in illustrating a character's inner thoughts to really show the true horror. He's much better at this than a typical bloodbath ending.

Speaking of characters, his two most effective are Jud the old man (even if it seems cliche of Wise Country Old Timer, it works) and the undead cat. They set the tone of dread and demonstrate compelling force that lurks in the Indian burial ground. I also liked his invocation of the classic monster, the Wendigo, even if its purpose was a little vague. He could've elaborated more on why it was there. There are some vague allusions to cannibalism that don't quite fit, even though he talks about cannibalizing one's grief and sanity. I guess it works but...

Like others, I thought the scene of the funeral fight was over the top and unnecesary and lent an unintended slapstick to an otherwise serious story in which death was an everpresent malevolent force.

King and some of his readers have said this was his scariest book; i haven't read much King so I can't say, but The Stand was much better at creating a very creepy tone of dread. Also, apparently he did this fairly early in his career-he shelved it for a long while- so it does showcase his talent pretty well. His pacing is impeccable and his skills for creating tension are tight. The grave digging and night scenes are pretty brilliant, as his wife and Jud's futile efforts to stop a morbid escapade.

I also enjoyed the historical devices of Jud's tales of setting the history of the burial ground; it's such a cliche to say "Indian burial ground' in horror. So it helps to create a believable back story there. He actually gets away with using a well-worn device.

Overall, it has very strong points and a somewhat predictable and disappointing end. As I said before, I would've preferred less of a blood bath and more of an eerie zombie ending. His creation of eerie zombies (as opposed to the brain-eating, Night of the LIving Dead kind) was very effective and chilling. It felt much more real than the movie stereotype.
  • I had seen the movie before I read the book so going in I thought I knew what to expect.

Overall this is an excellent creepy read.

The Diary of Janie Ray Books 15! Lila Segal Books Reviews

  • This is listed as books 1-5, but it is really only one 190-page book. I thought that I was buying a series of books for my granddaughter's birthday. She likes the Babysitter Club book series, so I thought maybe she would like this too. We shall see.
  • My 10 year old girl loved this series and was eager to purchase 6-7. She is a big Dork Diary fan but these books are more mature and are written in a more formal style. The books are larger than most and have slightly larger print for easier reading.
  • Bought it for my 10-year-old niece and she read it for six hours in the car! You can bet she will get more. She's a girl with tons of energy who I never thought would enjoy reading. She even read out load to her 5-year-old brother until he fell asleep.
  • My daughter gets bored of books easily. She finally is reading on her own, no complaints. Thank you! Loves the first book! My only wish is that the kindle app could correlate into traditional pages read instead of digital percent read for her homework reading log. Not sure how many "real" pages the books are.
  • Grand daughter loves these books. Her mom plans on buying her more of them. Great to keep active girls interest.
  • granddaughter luvs it
  • My 9 year old daughter absolutely devoured these books.
  • My daughter couldn't put these down. She loved them.
