Ebook Who Who in the Age of Jesus Geza Vermes 9780141017037 Books

An enlightening journey through the ancient world from "the greatest Jesus scholar of his generation" (The Sunday Telegraph)
Though the New Testament gospels are some of the most extraordinary documents ever written, the picture they provide of Jesus's world is a very partial one. This remarkable work paints a comprehensive and colorful picture of the world that Jesus knew. From detailed, convincing portraits of John the Baptist, Pontius Pilate, Herod, Jesus himself, and other key figures, to the Jewish and Hellenistic leaders often ignored in scripture, Who's Who in the Age of Jesus is a critical, in-depth look at one of the most tumultuous eras in human history.

- I have this book in its original hardback edition, but I bought the version as well to have as a handy reference. My own historical novel The Testament Of Marcellus is set in the period of Jesus, and I found myself turning again and again to Vermes' balanced, wise judgements in forming my own portraits of Jesus, Pilate, Herod and other New Testament figures.
This is exactly what it says it is -- a Who's Who, and not a narrative. The personalities of the age of Jesus are set out in alphabetical order, so that each can be looked up. As usual, Vermes confines himself to analyzing contemporary sources and avoids the temptation to fill out the blanks with speculation.
Vermes was the foremost authority on the Dead Sea Scrolls, and spent a lifetime studying, translating and publishing them. His knowledge of the literature of the period was unrivalled.
That makes this an invaluable reference aid for those interested in the period of the New Testament.
Having said that, I also find it fascinating to page through the book moving from reference to reference.
Highly recommended. - This is an invaluable piece of scholarship from a serious historian for reference or for reading. In alphabetical order, Vermes offers a brief (although he treats some in more detail) biographical summary pertaining to individuals of significance in Jesus' context. This is a great resource for any individual (trained or otherwise) who desires to have an overview of Jesus' religious and secular contemporaries and have a more thorough understanding of Jesus' cultural backdrop.
- An historical reference book of significant personages from around the time of Jesus of Nazareth. Interesting for Jews and Gentiles alike.
- An intriguing and entertaining historical study in the form of brief biographical sketches that can easily be digested straight through or as a reference. Very well done and based on solid historical research. This is not the revisionist polemic aimed at discrediting the Christian faith but a serious historical study that conveys accurately the middle east at the time of Jesus. It makes for an enjoyable and informative study that places the New Testament in historical context like few other works.
- Believe it or not, the New Testament gospels do not provide much information about Jesus, and this audio helps to provide more background detail. Included are portraits of John the Baptist, Pontius Pilate, Herod, Jesus and other key individuals of that era. From [...]
