- I simply can't read or watch horror and was concerned by the cover art that this would be too intense/gruesome for me. However, I read the preview and was impressed by the writing, general plot setup and initial character observations so I gave it a try. Really pleased I did. This is a very intricate modern thriller/serial killer on the loose type mystery with just enough romance and other things to bring levity. It gets a lot of things very right. Complicated characters with a strong supporting cast, a twist I truly did not even contemplate, methodical yet nail-biting "detectiving", and straightforward prose that moved everything along without breaking the immersive experience. The book frankly reads more like literature than the fluff that most f/f books seem to be these days. It reminded me of the fantastic early books in the Micky Knight series.
Very glad MJ decided to never jump to the serial killers' perspectives or follow the perspectives of any victims which I find over the line for myself (over active imagination and as an adult I need my sleep). It didn't shy away from the horror of what the serial killers were doing, yet didn't feel gratuitous to me.
I didn't realize it until afterwards when I looked up MJ's other works, but this is actually the second book in a series. It did seem that MJ bent over backwards in some drawn out passages to give previous history and connections that at the time I thot unnecessary to the plot but makes sense in retrospect. I'm not going to read the first book as MJ does such a good job pulling those threads in/using the resolution of that book as the catalyst of this one, it would feel redundant. That said, this was perfectly enjoyable as a stand alone.
